Working date picker

I’ve seen numerous posts about date pickers and lots of examples but none that start on the current day’s date so I built my own. It took far too long but was a great learning experience and now I’d like to know if there might have been a simpler way to achieve the same result as this one is a bit large and slow to load which impacts the prototype significantly when there are multiple instances.
