I can’t select an element using mouse dragging unless the element is fully selected.
This makes my process much more difficult because there can be a lot of elements, and they can be thin.

It sounds like you have the cursor mode set to “Select Contained”. You can change this setting by navigating to the cursor icon in the top left of the Axure RP interface and choosing “Select Intersected”.
Or you can press the [~] Tilda short key to toggle between these modes.
